Start with a problem you already have

The best first skill is not necessarily the one with the most downloads. Choose a narrow task you can verify: checking the weather, working with a test repository, organizing a small note vault, or editing a copy of a document. Clear inputs and visible outputs make it easier to judge whether the skill is helping.

Good first categories

Research, GitHub, notes, and common file formats are useful starting points because their results are easy to inspect. Communication and infrastructure skills can be valuable too, but deserve stricter permission boundaries because mistakes may affect other people or production systems.

Use ranking as a discovery signal

Agent Skills List automatically compares public adoption, current interest, and maintenance signals. Treat that ranking as a shortlist generator, then compare requirements and read the source before installing anything.
